The list of noninvasive procedures you can have done to get rid of the extra fat under your chin continues to grow. Before, if you wanted to get rid of that pesky fat (without going under the knife), your options were Kybella and CoolSculpting, two noninvasive solutions that just came on the market in the last few years. Now, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has cleared the body-contouring laser treatment SculpSure for use in that area as well.
SculpSure is the only laser that is approved for fat reduction and is said to be able to eliminate about 25 percent of the fat in a targeted area. Where Kybella destroys fat cells using deoxycholic acid injections, and CoolSculpting freezes the fat, SculpSure uses heat (it's a diode laser) to eliminate unwanted fat. Up until now, the fat fighting laser was only approved for use in the abdomen, flanks, back and inner and outer thighs.
Principle investigator in the SculpSure clinical trials, plastic surgeon Dr. Lawrence Bass, says the results proved that the fat melter can deliver the results patients are seeking. "Most patients in the 57-person clinical trial received two brief treatments six weeks apart,” he said. “The short treatment time, 100-percent satisfaction rate and dramatic contour reductions typically seen in the study patients give SculpSure the edge as the treatment of choice for the submental area."
In a press release announcing the FDA's approval of SculpSure for use in this area, a company representative stated that the device has been cleared for use on patients with a higher BMI than what it's allowed with other noninvasive fat reduction devices. “We are encouraged that our chin treatment was proven effective on patients with a body mass index (BMI) up to 43, while our competition in the noninvasive arena is only FDA-cleared to treat patients with a BMI up to 30," said divisional president of Cynosure, Kevin Thornal. "We are excited to provide our customers with a competitive advantage that can further widen their patient communities."
This news solidifies SculpSure's usefulness as a noninvasive solution for unwanted fat and it will be interesting to see how the device will be used in the future to treat other areas. We can already see its potential for use in other areas, which is a good thing. Who doesn't want to see their fat disappear after a quick 25-minute treatment?
